I bought a 2007 LS 460 last December. After I drove it for a day, I returned to the dealership and complained about a noise in the engine when idling and starting to take off. The noise sounds like a light tappet noise or a small sewing machine. The dealer attempted to dampen the noise by placing some insulating material in the rear of the engine. This helped, but now has returned. The Lexus mechanic seems to think it has something to do with the ports. He hasn't come up with any answer, I think he has given up. I have ridden other Lexus LS460's and have not noticed the same noise. I think there is an issue with the engine. I am at my wits end as to what step to take from here. I love this dealership, but I am not happy with my LS 460.

Incredible car! I've put 4k miles on mine without any probs. Great mileage, quick (not as quick as my vette -- duh). Comfortable even for my 6'7" frame. Minor wind noise from driver's side. A dream even on our 10 miles of gravel road (criminal to drive such a car on gravel). Features abound, tons of room in rear seat, Levinson sound system is unreal. Glad I didn't get the MB. THIS IS A BETTER CAR. I wouldn't change a thing (even the controls are perfect for a person my size). I've never been as comfortable in any vehicle -- period!

I am the proud owner of a 1997 Lexus LS 400 that
I purchased 5 years ago. It is simply gorgeous
(white diamond paint w/ gray leather). My Lexus
is a flawless car! My only complaint would be that the bottom base of the front seats is only
18" long! It should be about 21". What do the
front seat bases measure on the LS 460? I would
consider buying an LS 460. Thank you.

If you are talking about the length of the front seat cushion, It is now power adjustable for length. This allows it to accommodate both short and tall people with equal comfort.

I just purchased the 2007 LS460...and what a car! After owning a Jaguar XJ for the last 4 years I decided to take a look at the Lexus product (we used to have an ES300 and loved it)again. I was expecting the "old people car" look and was thrilled to see the sporty but elegant body style, not to mention all of the options inside! The very best thing though is the quiet, smooth ride that this car gives. It is the ultimate driving machine! LOVE IT!!!

For those who think the Lexus 460 looks a bit like the BMW 7 series. I have this to say. The BMW looks like it.. why ?
Even though the BMW came first. the styling of the new 460 actualy evolves from the previous 430 and has bits of the ES and GS in it.
People are probbaly referring to the back end.
Well for the BMW it looks ike they got it from the top end Toyota Crown (which is not exported) and especially the ES.
I have nothing against BMW or Mercedes, but I truely think the Lexus 460 is its own car..
Instead of making fun of the Lexcus 460, try and beat it.. afterall that is what competetion is about..

First the great news: Dealers are actually getting the cars into their showrooms! As you know demand for the LS460 has been so great that there was a 3-4 month wait. For the past six months I've looked at and driven every available upscale contender for my new car--Mercedes E and S class, BMW 5 series, Infinity M, Toyota Avalon, and the Acura RL. None was a viable replacement for my 2000 Avalon and I was utterly disappointed in the whole field. Then, along comes the LS460. I wasn't even going to buy one, just check to see if the dealer had one I could check out. Well, he had one, and two days later I have an LS460 in my garage and a six-year auto loan (that I didn't need). The car is absolutely gorgeous in every respect--the way it handles, its looks, the nav system, comfort, and, the main reason I bought it, the superb audio system. Stopping distance? Who cares. (Does anyone actually buy a car based on stopping distance)? Position of the LCD screen--perfect. Operation of the controls--couldn't ask for any more flexibility without compromising some safety. (Canadian drivers must be safer drivers since they are able to watch DVDs while moving. Haven't figured that one out yet). Now the downside to owning an LS460. You will put far too many miles on it just because of the sheer enjoyment of driving it. Figure on 20k miles a year. Your DVD-audio collection will grow immensely because of that great Mark Levinson audio system. And--the worst of all--you will have to put up with all that annoying whining from disgruntled (and jealous) Mercedes and BMW devotees who are no doubt envious that there are actually auto manufacturers that make reliable upscale cars that are less costly than theirs. (But I'm sure that Mercedes drivers are comforted by the fact that they get free towing for the life of the car). In short--I can't imagine that anyone on the planet will build a better car for me. Ever. Just ask me in ten years!

As good as this car is, it has 2 major problems. The worst is extremely long stopping distances (much longer than the LS430 it replaces): 60-0 in 143ft (almost the worst of ALL cars currently being made). The second issue is the center stack, which is a big step backwards from the LS430; it positions the LCD much lower & makes it difficult for the driver to keep one eye on the road while referencing the screen. The LS460L w/Sport Suspension solves the braking problem (60-0 in 111 ft) but adds $12,000 to the cost. The center stack is just bad design & needs a redo which probably won't happen. Both of these issues are surprising in a car which prides itself on perfection, but this first (std. wheelbase) edition misses the mark. I'd wait awhile before buying.

WHAT a machine!
Folks, the bar has just been raised. I currently own an LS430 as a daily driver here in the UK and got the keys to my dealers LS460L demonstrator the other day whilst mine was in.
It made my car seem noisy and uncomfortable. The leather is so supple and inviting, the cabin light years ahead of mine.
The engine and transmission were wonderful, the 8-speeder shifting without perception. For a large car, this car goes like a car half its weight - and size.
At home I transferred to the rear seats and enjoyed 10 minutes of "Casino Royale" on the DVD. The sound system was superb.
At just under 80,000 miles, my 4 year old car doesn't rattle or sqeak, it just gets on with the job in hand. What a superb prospect that in several years one of these lovely cars will sit on my driveway.
A remarkable car.

I own an RX400h, and am anxiously awaiting the LS600Lh to become available for order. The RX400h is the smoothest most amazing vehicle I've ever owned, the Lexus Synergy Drive is addicting. One test drive and you'll be taking it home. I can't even imagine what the ride will be like in the 600h!

In the seveteen short years it's been in existence, there has been an awful lot said about Lexus, probably more than any other brand name. You may wonder why??
Well the simple fact of the matter is that Lexus "came" from behind and dared to challenge the might of the Europeans and Americans. One factor that most people working for western car companies do not seem to understand is tere is no concept of the 35 or 40 hour week. Lexus Engineers and Robots do whatever it takes t get the job done, not watch the clock waiting to go home!! The whole approach and attitude is different at Lexus. They set out to be the best, and now the are the best - "Go Daddy Go "

The Lexus LS460 L sets the world standard for the Premium Luxury Class.
The egineering and quality of materials is better
and more sophisticated than any other car I have
driven, and I have driven them all, from Mini Cooper JCW to Ferrari. The Lexus LS460 L may not be the fastest, best handling, most luxurious and most economical car in the world, but when you put all these capabilities together then it is the best car in the world without a doubt!! When you then factor in the price there is absolutely no contest, not with Maybach, Rolls Royce or Bentley,
etc, etc it is just simply the best, most advanced car on the planet. Get really happy and buy one and save yourself a lot of money in the process.
Very long design and architecture process followed
by exemplary engineering techniques make this
car an outstanding piece of "art", and unlike most
other cars the LS460L is not built, it's ENGINEERED and how!!!

I think Lexus LS460 has only 380 horses due to Toyota philosophy of making cars, not just reliable but "better gas millage." As we can see that all the cars of Toyota from Corollas to LS460s, not just their horses increase but the number of MPG go up. We often think that if one car go faster than older one, it must be waste more gas; but Toyota makes it difference, they make cars go fast and have better MPG. I don't see that in Audi, BMW, or MBz. That makes Toyota difference and that's why they have the logan:"Toyota, moving forward."

I have a very good friend who writes for a prominent New York newspaper, I will refrain from saying which one. He just recently tested the all new LS460 for the paper and invited me to come along for the ride. After having really experienced the car I must say that I come away extremely impressed. Quality of materials has finally reached the level of the Germans and the car performs incredibly well. The ride is wonderfully smooth and even quieter than before. Toyota's recent downward spiral in reliablity gives me concern, though. I just recently took deliver of a 2007 Mercedes-Benz S550 and the new LS is equal to it in many ways. It still lacks the style, performance, and feeling of granduer of a Mercedes-Benz but it is impressive nonetheless.

My wife has a 5th generation GPS in her 2007 Lexus IS350. Very easy to use and understand. However certain functions are factory-set to operate only when the car is stopped-e.g., changing destination. Likewise with the phone-touch screen keypad and access to the phonebook are denied if the car is moving. I think it should be up to the driver to determine whether he/she can safely do this when the car is moving; certainly irritating to a passenger who wants to make a call or look up a number in the phonebook or find a restaurant nearby while you are driving. Lexus makes fine cars; it is a shame that they only come with parental controls.

In 1990 I started with ( after much research) the ES 250, then the 300, 400 (which now has 180k trouble free miles) So you see, I've been a fan from the beginning..and yes I've had MB, Audi, BMW,
Mon. Sept 18, I put down $1000 deposit on '07 LS460L,unseen
except for car mags. and web sites, price didn't matter, test drive
didn't matter....just Lexus reputation!!!The best car in the world!

Is it just me or does no one care about a clean car? MB and BMW
cannot be driven 50 miles without nasty brake dust all over the front wheels!

I have owned a 1992 Ls 400 and currently own a 1998 Ls 400 and these are some awesome reliable cars. I am very dissappointed with the new Ls 460 because it looks like a BMW. I wisk Lexus would have remodeled the new 460 from the previous 430 body style which looks AWESOME.

I had heard that the new LS 460 would have a steering by wire or some type of electric steering system with variable steering ratio. In reading the descriptions I am disappointed to not see anything about an improved steering system.
I am driving a 04 LS and the only problem with it is that it drives like a truck and I was planning to get a new 460 with an improved steering. It would also be wonderful to have a glove compartment light that is bright enough to be of some use.
I am now driving my 3rd LS and I love the solid smoothness and the extreme quiet of a Lexus LS. There is nothing like it.
RB
Seattle,
WAI had heard that
The power steering on all LS models is electric. If you opt for the Air Suspension package, you will get "Variable Gear Ratio Steering" (VGRS). This system Optimizes steering by vehicle speed for Low speed-improved maneuverability, Medium Speed-agile steering response and High speed-stable response.

Lexus has been outstanding since it first launched its line in the US market. Yet somehow they have managed to raise the bar for luxury vehicles yet again with the new LS and the otheR "L Finesse" designed vehicles. I can see the German guys banging their heads against the wall now! Simply AWESOME! !

Only one thing disappoints me: The steering wheel has glare- producing wood trim instead of full leather cover. Wood trim on the steering wheel should be a stand-alone option for those foolish enough to want it. I prefer perforated leather to smooth leather and a car like the 2007 LS460 should give customers a choice betwen smooth leather and perforated leather at no extra cost. The L version is a bargain compared to the overpriced LWB Maybach which has the lounge seat that I want. I hope Lexus marketing produces an informative brochure that includes engine technical details such as whether or not valves are sodium filled and whether or not cast-in iron liners are used in the engine block.

TO BH FROM PORTLAND:
man you are blind, im sorry to say, but look at a 2001 es 300 and a c class benz, i cant even look at the benz where as the es is gorgeous. just because lexus has chosen quality and luxury over performance, doesnt mean they suck. lexus is slowly adding more power and performance while adding or maintaining the luxuriuos ride. eventually, lexus will out perform benz and bmw, they already sell hell alot more cars then both compbined together. the new s class is sad, for the price, night vision? the lx 470 had that 2 years ago! backup camera, keyless, lexus had that 3 yearsd ago. benz just added that feature, AFTER LEXUS DID. the new benz s class remined me of a mercury from the back, the inside resembled a bmw.
mercedes lack quality and reliability, ive owned 6 mercedes and 7 lexi. i only drive a benz fro my parents who are still stuck in the past, and not to mention the amazing deal mercedes deal just to sell a car. in porltand the dealership sells 20 -30 cars daily, while mercedes sell 3 or 4. that should tell you something. and now price has no factor, the ls460 can compete with the s 500, the ls is fully loaded hybrid over 100 grand!!! there goes what little market share benz had. overall lexus pays 300 times more attention to detail and driver statisfaction than mercedes, wich is sad, my parents would be ahappier if i praised mercedes, but unfortunatly its not going to happen.

I had owned a Lexus LS430 since it was first introduced and it was my first Lexus. During the same period of time I had M-Bs, BMWs, Porsches and Toyotas in my garage and the LS proved it's reliability with zero defects and by comparision, I had my C32 towed twice, my BMW 523i towed once, and my 911 stalled on the street twice , all due to manufacturer's defects and they all happened within the first 18 months of life with less than 15,000kms.
For those 'status or image conscious' consumers, what good does a three point star make, if you cannot even drive it out of your garage ?
Lexus is still behind the competition in terms of styling and lacking a character of it's own, but the payoffs are just too many.
I tested the new M-B S500 3 months ago, and once again M-B did an excellent job on the styling of their flagship sedan with a lot of new tech gadgets.
However my deposit cheque went to Lexus and I can't wait to get my new LS460 as soon as they start to roll out of the factory !

To the writer from the bay area, I know that the wood in the new LS460 is real I was simply saying that to make a point that it is not nearly as convincing as the wood in a German luxury sedan, or even an Infiniti for that matter. Secondly, the wood in a Lexus is not real until you get to the GS sedan, just like it isn't real in a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 or any other entry-level luxury sedan. It is simply too expensive to use real wood. I would also like to say that the styling of the LS460 has grown on me since I first saw it. I still wouldn't call it pretty but it isn't offensive either.

It’s probably just me, but there appears to be more than one clandestine hot rodder on the Lexus “L-Finesse” design team. The 2007 cars are all getting a chopped and channeled look and feel about them. I, for one, like more rather than less glass through which to view the world as I drive through it. I love my 1999 Lexus GS and the new LS 460 style is just one more reason for me to keep it.

Great article on the 460, thanks!
I've been holding on to my '97 740 until something I can live with comes out. BMW and MB are finally getting close, but the 460L is a real contender this time.
But why the Camry-look front end? Folks coming over from BMW or MB aren't gonna like it.
Thanks,
JGC
But is it worth it in order to have logical controls, mp3, nav traffic, and Lexus reliability all in the same package? Depends on price. Regardless of all the goodies, Lexus does not carry the impact of BMW or MB for the status conscious I think. Or is that about to change?

This will probably make a lot of people angry, but I think the new Lexus LS is absolutely hideous. It is a Mercedes-Benz knock-off gone horribly wrong (any of you out there who don't see the similarities between the 1999-2006 Mercedes-Benz S-Class need to get your eyes examined). I also find the interior with its total lack of style to be a disappointment, the LS' interior has barely changed at all since the car was introduced in 1990. The overly glossy faux wood trim and quality of the leather are also light years behind the German competition. I have no doubt the car will ride incredibly well and will probably be the quietest in its class, but I also have no doubt it will be the worst performer. I was expecting big things from Lexus and they did not deliver. I guess they are perfectly content being the company that builds cars for those who cannot afford their German competition, versus actual competitors for that said German competition. Call me a senile old fool, but I will be holding onto my Mercedes-Benz thank you very much.

I have had four LS's (400 and 430) and all have been extremly dependable (no surprises there). I had one new BMW in my life and that was the last ne, I got tired of going in for repairs frequently. In my family we now have a 2005 RX330, 2006 GS300, 2007 ES 350 all, also trouble free. I was fortunate in being invited to a showing of the LS 460 and had the opportunity to drive it, wow, what a car and the self park feature is amazing. I now have one on order - incredible automobile. I have owned 1990, 1995, 1998 LS 400's and a 2001 Ls 430 ULTRA. Each car was better than the last. I logged over 400k miles on them all and can count on one hand the number of total problems I had. The best car I have ever owned so far (of over 350!) is my black '01 LS430 Ultra. I am a car guy and cant wait for the new 460. I had difficulty deciding between the conventional LS460L and the (faster) but possibly less exciting (less engine roar, trunk with batteries taking up space & more $$) and finally ordered the 460H. If I really need a fast car I guess I will have to take the Merc SL55.

As you probably know already that the Lexus RS-330 hit the U.S. market with a series of back orders (at least in the area where I live). My question to you is quite simple: will the LS-460 suffer from “Back-Orderitus”? In other words will the supply meet the expected demand? Or, must I deposit a hefty sum of money to my local dealership in order for me to acquire such an excellent piece of high-technology and art work meshed into one luxury car?

The LS460L is exactly what I've been looking for (in every way) for my next vehicle. I purchased a 2003 LS430 for my wife in 2003, and the car is Excellent. I've always felt that the seating in the back was too small and not quite comfortable for long trips. However, the new LS460L puts that to rest. With the reclining seats, and compartments for refrigated items, I need no need to get out of the vehicle, unless you need to use the rest room.

I recently went to the New York International Auto Show and saw the LS460L in person. I have to say that it made quite an impression on me. I think it will give the germans something to think about. I loved the exterior and interior design. The rear seat looked to have plenty of room and the reclining and messaging rear seat seems to offer Maybach opulence. I can't wait until the fall when I will test drive the eight speed automatic. I expect it to shift as smooth as silk. But hopefully it doesn't hunt around for gears too much while downshifting like the mercedes seven speed. All in all I'm very impressed with the LS and can't wait for its release.

The new LS460 is one remarkable car. I am a long time Lexus owner. I have friends that are long time Lexus owners. Can't wait to purchase this one.
What's the deal with all the secrets about the price. When you say $55,000+ Premiun is that the price expected for the base model. I think the LS460L will be right at $70,000. If Lexus is going to sell this baby for $55,000 they won't be able to keep them on the showroom floor.
Need to know about the colors that will be available. Went to the car show in New Orleans. No LS460. The colors for the ES350 were outstanding. Hope they are the same for the LS460.

I own two LS-400 models. I must have a 2007 LS 460. Fantastic automobile! By the way, my Lexus cars have been the most trouble-free cars that I have ever owned.
Have a great day!

I've owned big Bimmers, a recent S class and several LS's. I'm currently driving a Bimmer645. While fun to drive, it's simply too small. I moved away from LS's about six years ago because I was bored with the styling. However, the cars were extremely reliable and drove beautiffully. I can't wait to buy a new LS460. I will argue until I'm blue in the face that Lexus makes the best car on the market in terms of build quality and driving pleasure. While the MB and BMW may have more prestige I firmly believe based on my experience that they are inferior to the LS.

I bought the ls430 when it first came out in 1990. It was the best car I ever owned. Only problem was it was bad in the snow. If they make the new 460L all wheel drive I will buy one.

I have had numerous Cadillacs, Corvettes, Mercedes, you name it. My current car is the latest model Mercedes SL500. I love cars! But I have never been more enamored with this LS 460. I went online to search for my next car, thinking I might get the new S class Mercedes. But when I saw the pictures and the video on the 2007 LS 460L, I started drooling! I have never owned a Lexus, but I went to a local Lexus dealer and drove the current LS 430. Before I left the dealership, I put a deposit down on the 460. In fact, my next car will be a 460L. October won't come soon enough.

WILL THE LS 460 BE AVAILABLE IN ALL WHEEL DRIVE? THIS WOULD MAKE IT THE TRUE PREMIER VEHICLE.

That has not been announced at this early date. We should hear more at the New York Auto Show in April.

We have been Lexus owners for years and have been anxiously awaiting a previw of the new 2007 Lexus LS460. Is it my imagination or does the side and rear view of the new Lexus LS460 and 460L look like the BMW 745LI? We will be comparing it with the BMW and the 2007 Mercedes S Class.

You should ask your local Lexus dealer. From the sketchy information we have so far, the new LS460 and LS460L will be in showrooms sometime in the Fall of 2006.
